Training at Home: Simple Drills to Try with Your Child

Training at home can be FUN!

At Kaizen Black Belt Academy in Redditch, we know that martial arts training doesn’t stop when class ends! Practicing at home is a great way to reinforce skills, build confidence, spend quality time together and burn off extra energy!

Training at home allows children to refine their techniques, develop discipline, and improve their fitness levels. It also strengthens the bond between parent and child, creating a supportive environment where kids can feel encouraged to push themselves. Even just 10-15 minutes of practice each day can make a huge difference in their progress. Plus, training at home helps kids stay active, build coordination, and enhance their focus – key skills that will benefit them not just in martial arts but in everyday life.

To help you get started, we’ve put together a range of fun and simple drills designed to improve reaction speed, balance, memory, and coordination. These exercises will make home practice engaging and effective, ensuring your child stays motivated between classes, and improving their martial arts journey.

Martial Arts Drills for Ages 4-8

Young children learn best through play, so these drills are designed to be fun and engaging while reinforcing key martial arts skills.

1. Ninja Reflex Game (Reaction & Coordination)

This drill helps children improve their reaction time and coordination, teaching them to anticipate movements and respond quickly.

What You Need: A small soft ball or a rolled-up sock.

  • Stand a short distance apart from your child.
  • Toss the ball gently toward them and call out “Block!” or “Dodge!”
  • If you say “Block!” they must use their arms to deflect the ball.
  • If you say “Dodge!” they must jump or step to the side.
2. Balance Beam Challenge (Balance & Coordination)

Balance is a fundamental skill in martial arts, helping children maintain stability during kicks and defensive movements.

What You Need: A strip of tape on the floor or a narrow board.

  • Have your child walk across the “beam” slowly while maintaining balance.
  • Add challenges like squatting, turning, kicking or hopping on one foot.
3. Copycat Kids (Memory & Technique)

This drill helps build muscle memory, making techniques more fluid and natural over time.

What You Need: Just a clear space.

  • Perform a basic martial arts punch or kick (jab, cross, hook, uppercut, front kick or roundhouse) and have your child copy you.
  • Start slow, then increase speed and add techniques to create combinations.
4. Animal Walks (Strength & Coordination)

These movements develop strength, flexibility, and coordination – key attributes for martial arts movements.

What You Need: Just space to move.

  • Call out different animal movements like “Bear Walk” (walking on hands and feet), “Frog Jumps”, “Duck Walk” or “Crab Walk.”
  • Create circuits, 30 seconds of each exercise right after one another, followed by 30 second rest. Increase the amount of reps/time.
5. Red Light, Green Light: Martial Arts Edition (Reaction & Control)

This game enhances reaction time, self-control, and the ability to transition between movement and stillness—essential for sparring and katas.

What You Need: A clear space.

  • Call out “Green Light” to have your child practice punches, kicks, or blocks.
  • Call out “Red Light” to make them freeze in place – if they move/giggle/fidget they do 2 burpees.
Martial Arts Drills for Ages 9 and Over

Older children can focus on refining their techniques and building stronger muscle memory with these engaging drills.

1. Pad Tap Reaction Drill (Reaction & Speed)

This drill enhances reflexes and defensive skills, helping students prepare for real-time sparring situations.

What You Need: A focus pad, cushion, or your hand.

  • Stand in front of your child and lightly tap different areas (shoulder, knee, side) with the pad.
  • They must react by blocking, moving, or countering with a quick punch or kick.
  • Speed up as they improve, and challenge them with random patterns!
2. Shadow Sparring Challenge (Coordination & Footwork)

Shadow sparring improves fluidity in movement, footwork, and the ability to anticipate an opponent’s actions.

What You Need: A mirror or open space.

  • Have your child perform a series of martial arts moves as if they are sparring an invisible opponent.
  • Call out moves like “jab-cross-kick” or “duck-block-punch” to improve reaction time.
  • Make it a game by adding music or timing their best combos!
3. Memory Kata (Memory & Precision)

Katas reinforce discipline, precision, and mental focus, essential components of martial arts training.

What You Need: Space to move.

  • Review a basic kata or sequence learned in class, or create your own.
  • Perform it together, then have your child try it alone.
  • Test their memory by adding or removing moves and seeing if they can follow!
4. Reaction Call-Out Drill (Speed & Awareness)

This drill enhances reaction speed, awareness, and listening skills – important for self-defence scenarios.

What You Need: Just a space to move.

  • Call out different commands like “Duck!” “Block!” “Kick!” and have your child react instantly.
  • Call out different techniques like “Slip!” “Upper Block” “Front Kick” and your child must perform that specific technique.
  • Call out different techniques like “Jab!” “Hook” “Round House” and your child must react in a way to defend that technique.
5. Push-Up Punches (Strength & Endurance)

This builds upper body strength and endurance, key for maintaining strong punches and defensive stances.

What You Need: A soft floor or mat.

  • Have your child do a push-up (knees on the floor) and, upon rising, throw a punch before going back down (swap hands each time).
  • Increase difficulty by lifting knees off the floor, increase even more by placing feet on chair or sofa (decline push ups).
  • Just for fun, but be careful – feeling confident? Try a clap instead of a punch when you’re at the highest point of the push up.
Keep Practicing and Show Us Your Skills!

These simple home drills will help your child improve their martial arts abilities while having fun. Practicing regularly, even for just 10-15 minutes a day, can make a huge difference in their progress. Remember, practice makes perfect!

Don’t worry if they struggle at first, mistakes are part of the learning journey, and every error is a step towards improvement. Encourage your child to keep trying, stay patient, and enjoy the process. The more they practice, the more confident and skilled they will become.

Encourage your child to demonstrate their new skills in class – we love to see how our students are growing!
